Maragogype Grand

A remarkably rare expression of Maragogype, cultivated within the Coffea Diversa botanical garden on the volcanic highlands of Suchitán. Its extraordinarily large beans and extremely low-yielding trees make Maragogype 928 a coffee of botanical significance as well as sensory intrigue. Fully washed to emphasise clarity, structure and the distinctive character of this unusual lineage.

Origin notes

Volcán de Suchitán, Jutiapa Producer · Coffea Diversa Suchitán, founded by Gonzalo Hernández and José Padilla On the high slopes of Volcán de Suchitán, Coffea Diversa maintains something closer to a living conservatory than a conventional coffee estate. Hundreds of rare varieties are preserved and studied here, while only a small selection is produced as individual micro-lots. Maragogype 928 is among the garden's most visually remarkable coffees. It belongs to the Maragogype family, a natural mutation of Typica first identified in Brazil in the nineteenth century, but the 928 lineage displays an especially open architecture. Its tall trees carry widely spaced branches and sparse foliage, producing seeds of exceptional size in extremely limited quantities. These characteristics make Maragogype 928 difficult to cultivate commercially. Its yields are very low and the trees remain vulnerable to coffee-leaf rust. Its continued cultivation at Suchitán therefore represents preservation as much as production. The coffee grows beneath shade trees in nutrient-rich volcanic soil, where warm days and cool highland nights encourage gradual cherry development. After selective harvesting, this lot is fully washed to present the variety with clarity and restraint. Good to know

Questions before you brew

Whole beans stay fresher for longer because grinding exposes more surface area to oxygen. If you own a burr grinder, always pick beans and grind just before you brew. Choose ground only if you don't have a grinder at home. When you pick ground, tell us the brew method (espresso, filter, cafetière, AeroPress, moka) and we grind Maragogype Grand to the exact particle size for that method.
